Can they be run?’ Steeve: ‘I could probably find the programs in the archives, but there’s nothing to run them on. You can’t find those kinds of smartphones anymore.’ Jett: ‘They probably wouldn’t have anticipated something like that… Show me what came up during the initial decoding—the part where you saw the postal code…’ Steeve: ‘Here. Take a look.’ Jett: ‘Look here. After your “postal code,” there were four eights… Try loading this address in your browser: https:// followed by all the digits that came after the four eights.’ Steeve: ’It’s a blank page.’ Jett: ‘Try selecting everything. Press Ctrl+A.’ Steeve: ‘Oh! There’s another web address.’ Jett: ‘Copy it into your browser and load it.’ Steeve: ‘Now it’s a QR code.’ Jett: ‘Try loading it into an online reader.’ Steeve (after a moment): ’It’s a link to an open-date airline ticket. To San Francisco. So much time has passed since then.’ Jett: ’I’ll try to fly there ahead of time and wait at the airport. You take these glasses. They’re connected to an AI for facial recognition. If the cameras spot recurring faces—like someone tailing you—you’ll feel the right temple of the glasses vibrate. They won’t be of any use on the plane, but start using them the moment you leave the house. I’ll see all the AI reports on my server and stay updated on the situation.’ If you notice the left temple of your glasses vibrating, check the messenger on my AI; there will be a message there.
